Attac-Magazin (Hannover, Germany) spoke with David S. Muraskin, chief litigator for the plaintiff in the legal challenge currently being mounted against the Arkansas ag-gag law, which was enacted in 2017 at the instigation of a state legislator who is herself a pig farm owner. An ag-gag law tries to infringe on the rights of freedom of speech and freedom of the press in order to help protect animal owners from having abuses - both legal and illegal - exposed in public by whistleblowers, animal rights activists and other concerned citizens. Mr. Muraskin explains how and why the law was passed in the State Legislature - and why the current political climate in the U.S. values property rights more highly than traditional Constitutional rights or the rights of animals to humane and fair treatment. Plaintiff in the suit against this pernicious law is the Animal Legal Defense Fund, though other organisations have since also joined them in the lawsuit.
